Shetland will soon be back on our screens with a whole new story to tell

BBC Shetland is making a comeback for its 10th series. The much-adored and long-standing show, inspired by the novels penned by Ann Cleeves, will see Alison O’Donnell and Ashley Jensen return to their roles as DI Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh and DI Ruth Calder.

In the upcoming season, the team are lured to a secluded village following the eerie murder of an elderly woman. As they start to untangle life in the tight-knit community, shocking, deeply hidden secrets emerge with unforeseen repercussions for everyone involved.

Series 10 brings a number of firsts, including a change of location, which will see Shetland take over a real-life village and morph it into a fictional one. Lunniswick is actually a place called Levenwick which is on the road between Lerwick and Sumburgh airport.

It will also see familiar face Sgt Billy McCabe, portrayed by Lewis Howden, out of the office and in the field for the first time. The series will also delve into Billy’s personal life for the first time with the introduction of his wife Morag.

But when does series 10 of Shetland kick off, how many episodes are there and how can you tune in? Here’s what you need to know.

How many episodes of Shetland are there?

Shetland returns for a tenth series at 9pm on Wednesday, November 5. Viewers can either tune into BBC One and BBC iPlayer to watch the drama unfold, reports the Daily Record.

The new season consists of six hourly episodes, with each episode airing weekly on the same channel at the same time. This means that the second episode will air on Wednesday, 12 November.

The synopsis for the new series reveals: «In the isolated hamlet of Lunniswick, the body of the retired social worker Eadie Tulloch has been out in the elements for a number of days.

«A picture of loneliness begins to emerge as Eadie had not spoken to her son Ed in years. Old friend Arthur Mair is too busy caring for his ailing wife Lana, while their house is full with daughter Isobel, her struggling husband Tom, and their heavily pregnant teenager, Jess having recently moved in.

«Attentive local Colin Waite turns Calder and Tosh’s focus to David Powell, an anxious, young neighbour with a troubled past. His overly protective mum, Gina, blocks all questions while trying to figure out what her son is hiding.

«Suspecting that the residents of Lunniswick are withholding information about their relationships with Eadie, Calder and Tosh begin to untangle a complex web of lies. Even worse, there’s a personal connection to the case for one of the team, pushing loyalty to its limits.»
