Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking to appoint a new manager after sacking Vitor Pereira following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham

Sporting Clube de Portugal manager Rui Borges has addressed reports linking him to the Wolves job following the sacking of Vitor Pereira.

Pereira was relieved of his duties after failing to register a single win in the club’s opening 10 games. Wolves currently sit bottom of the Premier League table. Alongside Borges, Erik ten Hag, Rob Edwards and Brendan Rodgers have emerged as potential candidates to succeed him – with former boss Gary O’Neil also initially in the frame.

However, O’Neil has since withdrawn from the process. According to The Daily Mail, Wolves have added Borges to their shortlist.

It’s also been suggested that the Premier League side would need to pay Sporting a compensation fee to secure his services.

The 44-year-old, who succeeded Ruben Amorim in Lisbon last December, is under contract until the end of the season, with Sporting holding an option to extend for a further year.

Ahead of Sporting’s Champions League clash with Juventus, Borges was asked about Wolves ‘ interest but ultimately shut it down, stressing how happy he is at the club.

«I’m happy, at the place I want to be,» he told reporters. «I’m happy where I want, where I am.

«And I hope that is the case for many more years because it’s a good sign and is where I feel great.»

Meanwhile, Sporting president Frederico Varandas welcomed the interest, pointing to the club’s growing influence across Europe.

«Lately we’ve had great news about Sporting’s value,» he outlined. «A few weeks ago it was Bernardo Palmeiro on Juventus’ shortlist, now Rui Borges is on Wolverhampton’s shortlist.

«And today there’s also talk of the B team coach [Joao Giao for Casa Pia]. Sporting is now a reference in national football and in Europe. That’s what Sporting has become.

«‘If Rui Borges is secure?’ Yes.»

Wolves are in search of their first victory in the Premier League, having taken just two points from their 10 games.
