At this time last year, John Mateer was an early frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy and had breathed new life into Oklahoma’s football program.
It’s a different story in 2026.
The Sooners have scored just 24 total points in their past two games, and they’re coming into this clash with Georgia after barely beating New Mexico in Week 3.
Oklahoma’s defense will need to be exceptional for the Sooners to have any hope in Athens on Saturday.
Oklahoma vs. Georgia odds, prediction
We can be pretty sure that Georgia is really good this season, but we can’t know where the ceiling is just yet.
The Bulldogs have scored 178 points in three games, but they’ve done it against Tennessee State, Western Kentucky and Arkansas.
Gunner Stockton and the offense will get a much stiffer test against Oklahoma.
For all of the Sooners’ issues with the ball, they look like a beast without it.
Brent Venables has turned Oklahoma into an elite defensive team in his tenure, and this year looks no different. The Sooners are allowing just 3.5 yards per play, and they’ve conceded just 23 points on the season to UTEP, Michigan and New Mexico.

Stopping Georgia is a lot tougher than containing those three teams, but this isn’t an outlier for the Sooners.
They’ve been elite on defense for years now.
With Mateer struggling to get on target and the defense humming, I expect Oklahoma to do everything in its power to slow this game into a slog. The Sooners know they’re unlikely to match Georgia in a shootout, so they’ll need to drag the Bulldogs into the mud.

That style of play has never been an issue for the Bulldogs, who are always open to a backyard brawl.
Georgia will likely still be too much to handle, but don’t be shocked if the defenses rule this game and points are at a premium.
