The investigation into the spectacular theft at the Louvre has taken a decisive turn. Almost exactly one week after four men stole eight jewels from the French crown collection at the world’s most visited museum, two men suspected of being part of the gang were arrested and taken into police custody on the evening of Saturday, October 25.
Confirming information partially reported by several media outlets, including Paris Match and Le Parisien, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated in a press release on Sunday morning that «investigators from the BRB [the French police organized crime unit] carried out arrests on Saturday evening.» Le Monde has learned that one of the suspects is a French national, while the second holds both French and Algerian citizenship.
The latter was arrested on Saturday around 10 pm at Charles de Gaulle airport by the BRB and the BRI, a tactical unit from the French police, as he was about to board a flight to Algeria. BRB investigators, who had been monitoring both suspects for some time in hopes of tracing the stolen goods and identifying accomplices, accelerated their operation. The second suspect was arrested simultaneously in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, north of Paris.
