Chinese state television has released an animation showing simulated attacks on Taiwan, depicting missiles being launched at the island before hitting cities like Taipei, the island’s capital, and Kaohsiung.

The footage, released on Friday, comes as China’s military continues with its second day war of games around Taiwan, testing its ability to “seize power” and control key areas of the island.

Beijing claimed the exercises were launched to “punish” Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-te, who Beijing has labelled a “separatist”.

The two days of drills in the Taiwan Strait and around groups of Taiwan-controlled islands near the mainland’s coast – which a Taiwanese official said included the mock bombing of foreign vessels – started on Thursday, just three days after President Lai took office.

Taiwan has condemned China’s actions and has itself deployed jets and a mobile air defence system to monitor the exercises.
