Inheritance tax will not be cut or abolished in the Conservative Party election manifesto despite pressure from senior MPs, multiple Tory campaign insiders have told The Telegraph.

Sir Keir Starmer has slapped down claims by a Labour frontbencher that class sizes in the state sector could get bigger as a result of the party’s VAT policy on private school fees.

Failure to promise a change would effectively bring an end to a year of serious consideration inside Number 10 and Number 11 about whether to act on inheritance tax.
 

There has been considerable public pressure from Tories for inheritance tax to be cut in recent weeks, with some arguing it would create a simple tax dividing line with the Labour Party.

Labour has sparked fears of a pupil exodus by promising to impose VAT on private school fees as soon as possible if it wins the election on July 4.

The Labour leader insisted that Emily Thornberry was “wrong” when she suggested on Sunday that the change could spark a rise in state school class sizes, when she said “if we have to, in the short term, have larger classes, we have larger classes”.
