The reported decision to let Ukraine carry out long-range strikes could spark World War III, Steve Gill has told RT

US President Joe Biden’s reported approval for Kiev to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory with US-supplied missiles is pushing the world closer to World War III, American political commentator Steve Gill has told RT.

Multiple media outlets reported on Sunday that the Biden administration had given Kiev the green light to deploy long-range American-made ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia’s internationally recognized borders.

The decision allegedly made by the outgoing American president “crosses a red line” by putting the US “dangerously close to an armed conflict directly with Russia,” Gill, who served as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for US Trade Representative (1992-1993) told RT on Monday. Moscow has previously warned that any such attack would constitute an act of war between a NATO member and Russia.

Gill expressed hope that “saner heads will prevail” both in the US and the EU to pull back from this “ridiculous” decision.

“I have confidence that president Putin and the real leadership in Western Europe as opposed to the Biden administration are not going to allow Biden in his waning days in office to lurch the world into an actual World War III situation,” he stated. According to Gill, Republican lawmakers will make an “aggressive push” to stop sending billions of dollars to Ukraine after the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.

While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is “pledging to put as many billions as they can into the pockets of Ukrainians and into Zelensky’s, probably personally,” the incoming Trump administration will put an end to this, Gill said.

He also suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be “anxious” to talk with the incoming US president to resolve the Ukraine conflict, and expressed hope that the US and Russia will move forward to restoring bilateral communications and economic cooperation.
