Bryson DeChambeau has been speaking about the upcoming Masters tournament, with the LIV Golf star’s comments on Augusta representing a major U-turn from his previous stance
Bryson DeChambeau has been full of praise for Augusta National ahead of this year’s Masters – a notable shift from his earlier controversial claim that the course played as a par 67 for him. The reigning US Open champion is chasing his third major victory and will be one of around a dozen LIV Golf stars competing at Augusta.
As the 2025 Masters approaches, DeChambeau has been speaking glowingly about the iconic course, despite his previous criticism. Back in 2020, he caused a stir by claiming Augusta was a «par 67 for me,» even though it’s officially a par 72.
His bold remark sparked a stiff backlash, and he has since admitted it was a «mistake» that taught him a valuable lesson. Speaking at LIV Miami on Friday, DeChambeau, 31, shared what excites him most about Augusta and didn’t shy away from expressing his deep appreciation.
«I honestly love the atmosphere. It’s one of the most peaceful places,» he said with enthusiasm. «My favourite moment is when the sun is kind of setting and everybody has kind of gotten off the golf course and you’re just hitting golf balls by yourself or a couple other pros… and you see the sun going down.
«That’s what I look forward to a lot coming into next week, other than playing well and giving myself a chance. I really enjoy those moments after the round practicing hard into the night.»
His current admiration for Augusta marks a striking reversal from his 2020 assertion, when he said: «I’m looking at it [Augusta] as a par 67 for me because I can reach all the par fives in two, no problem. If the conditions stay the way they are, that’s what I feel like par is for me.»
Reflecting on those comments prior to last year’s Masters, DeChambeau expressed a more modest viewpoint: «I have a level of respect for this golf course that’s a little bit different than a couple years ago.
«Regarding the 67 comment, you mess up. I’m not a perfect person. Everybody messes up. You learn from your mistake, and that was definitely one.»
His track record at Augusta has been uneven, with multiple missed cuts and only one top-10 finish – a tie for sixth last year.
Still, on Friday, he spoke with assurance about his current mindset: «I’d say I’m in a great frame of mind. I’m happy about life.
«[I have] got a lot of positive things going for me, not only in YouTube but outside of that, in business, and just the people that I have around me. I think we’re stronger than ever, and that’s what matters most, ultimately.
«Yeah, putting on a green jacket, winning the US Open trophy, winning the Open Championship, the PGA Championship, that’s all great. But really what matters to me is the people that I have around me and who I can trust.»
