Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has emerged as a surprise contender to be the next head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Kingsbury’s return to the NFL has gone swimmingly, as the Commanders’ offense with Jayden Daniels at quarterback has gone from dormant for several years to one of the NFL’s best.
Last year, Kingsbury was on the staff at USC and worked directly with Bears’ starting quarterback Caleb Williams. A possible reunion could be in the works after the season ends, per NFL Network.
The Bears are 4-8 after a promising start to the season including a five-game losing streak.
Expectations for Chicago were incredibly high this season with Williams entering the fold and being viewed as one of the best quarterback prospects of his generation.
Now, he’ll be asked to learn a second NFL offense in as many years.
Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury may soon be leaving the team
Kingsbury has been named as a surprise contender to land the Chicago Bears head coaching job
Kingsbury has been an NFL head coach before with the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022, right before his 10-month stay at USC.
His second stay in the NFL was not expected to lead to another head-coaching opportunity this soon.
However, the turnaround for the Commanders has turned heads around the NFL for how far ahead of schedule in development the team is, and the comparisons to Williams of Daniels are obvious.
Kingsbury was the head coach of Texas Tech for Patrick Mahomes’ entire college career, with the Red Raiders offense working like clockwork. The team’s defense left a lot to be desired.
That was the same story in his time at Arizona with responsibilities on both sides of the ball.
Kingsbury likely would not leave his post with Washington until the end of the season should he seek out the Bears’ gig.
