Doctor details little-known hygiene rules everyone should follow

As we head into the sweaty, sticky summer months, personal hygiene becomes even more important.

Dr. Noman Mohamed, a cosmetic dermatologist, often takes to social media to share advice about how best to take care of your skin.

In a recent video posted to TikTok, he shared some hygiene facts that everyone should know.

The London-based doctor started with when to wear deodorant versus when to wear antiperspirant.

‘Use your antiperspirant (not deodorant) at night, that’s when sweat glands are less active so easier to plug them,’ he wrote about his first suggestion.

His second tip was to help remedy smelly body parts.

‘A benzoyl peroxide cleanser on your stinky feet or armpits when you shower will keep you smelling FRESH,’ he claimed in the video.

Dr. Mohamed then said that shaving under your arms will result in less body odor.

‘Sweat helps the body cool down but thankfully the sweat glands under the pits represent a very small portion of the glands on the body so we can still regulate our temperature without issues,’ he further explained in a comment.

Speaking of smelling, he then suggested a sure-fire way to work out if you’re not washing yourself properly.

‘Put your finger in your belly button and behind your ear and smell it… now don’t forget to wash there next time,’ he quipped.

‘Body acne?’ the expert then questioned. ‘Shampoo and condition your hair first then wash your body.’

If you’ve ever wanted to know exactly how you’re supposed to clean behind your ears or the best way to guarantee your armpits stay sweat-free, there are certain techniques that might benefit you.

Previously, FEMAIL spoke to a dermatologist and a hygiene expert to find out exactly how to stay scrubbed up.

Clean beauty founder and product developer Mary Futher, who makes viral videos as Madame Sweat and founded the brand Kaia Naturals, is an expert when it comes to personal cleanliness.

Futher, who is based in Toronto, Canada, has even launched products like sweat powder and detox charcoal deodorant to make sure her more than 780,000 TikTok followers are keeping clean.

Her first tip is to avoid smelly feet by  washing them ‘very well with the bar including between the toes.’

Just washing your feet in the shower isn’t quite enough, according to Futher.

She warned that ‘odor sweat glands exist in the feet, groin and underarms that are called the eccrine glands, and when you sweat, the sweat sits on the surface of the skin and turns into bacteria, causing a very smelly type of bacteria.’

To avoid underarm odor, Futher says it may be best to avoid every day body wash, instead, she advised washing for 20 seconds with natural antibacterial soap, which she said would ‘give your deodorant a little help.’

She also reminds people to always clean their necks, and massage their scalps when washing their hair to get rid of build up.
