A monkey that fled its enclosure and was seen roaming the Scottish Highlands has been recaptured after four nights of freedom.

The Japanese macaque, nicknamed Kingussie Kong, which fled the Highland Wildlife Park on Sunday, was tranquilised on Thursday morning after a major search operation which involved two heat-seeking drones and a mountain rescue team.

The primate, which experts believe may have been searching for a new troop to join after it got into a fight, was found around two miles from the park and is being checked by park staff.

It is expected to then be returned to its enclosure, the BBC reported.

The monkey’s escape has caused worldwide press attention, with locals in the town of Kincraig reporting multiple sightings.

However, it proved elusive for several days, despite being spotted by drones.

The breakthrough came after drones once again began searching for the monkey on Thursday morning, after high winds the previous day curtailed efforts.
