House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is getting trolled on social media for posting a video insisting “the American people are with us” in opposing President Trump — while standing all alone outside the Capitol.
Jeffries made the claim in a video posted on X – and several users mocked the New York Democrat over the fact that he had no supporters there to back up his claim.
“Just got back to the Capital. Another day, another lie from these people who are out of control,” Jeffries’ video message begins, with the desolate east side of the US Capitol Building in the background.
“I’m told that Donald Trump, Mike Johnson and the extreme MAGA Republicans are claiming that Democrats are sending paid protesters into their town hall meetings,” he adds.
“What’s wrong with y’all? What’s wrong with y’all? We don’t need to send paid protesters into your town hall meetings.”
“The American people are with us,” the Democratic leader claims. “All across the country people are rising up to push back against the assault on the economy, the assault on hardworking families, the assault on our democracy and the assault on Medicaid.”
“We don’t need paid protesters, bro. The American people are with us.”
The congressman’s post was quickly ratio’ed on X — racking up far more replies (three times as many in this case) than shares.
“Which genius decided to film a video where House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says the American people are with him and his colleagues—while standing completely alone in front of the Capitol?” journalist Yashar Ali wrote on X, in response to the video.
“I’m not saying he needed to film this in front of a massive crowd, but who in his comms or advance team thought it was a good idea to stage this in front of a building full of deeply unpopular politicians instead of going with a tight, controlled shot at his desk?” Ali added.
Democrats’ congressional approval rating hit an all-time low last month, with only 21% of voters signaling support for the job they’ve done, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll.
Not even Democrats like the Dems in Congress, with less than half (40%) saying they approved of the way congressional Democrats are handling their job under Trump.
“The vast emptiness around him makes his message feel disconnected from reality — no crowd, no visible support, just Jeffries delivering a supposed show of strength in a setting that unintentionally reinforces the exact opposite,” Ali continued.
Conservative commentator Steve Guest accused Jeffries of “gaslighting” the public in the video.
“There are literally 0 people with Hakeem Jeffries in this video where he says ‘The American people are with us,’” Guest wrote on X.
Another social media user joked that the video “needs crickets sound effect.”
Others argued that the sterile video reinforced Republican claims that protesters at GOP congressional town halls were paid.
“Not just bad optics, but what kind of moron messaging reinforces the bogus claim against itself,” read one X post.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) argued last week that Democrats showed up to several GOP town hall events “early” and “filled up the seats” to protest their support of the Trump administration.
“The videos you saw of the town halls were for paid protesters in many of those places,” Johnson claimed to CNN.
Jeffries’ office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
