I found a job using my passion for baking but I hated it — what now?

I really thought that baking was it for me, but when I found classes and a job I found my motivation actually didn’t go past my home kitchen. I’m looking to reroute to another of my interests but now I’m starting to doubt myself. How do I know if a passion is strong enough to turn into a career?

Yes, chef!

Sounds to me like you did the right thing. You took a personal passion, pursued it further, and then found a job. Discovering that it is really only a personal passion is part of the journey and exploration. The only way to know for sure is by trying different things.

However, before you give up on baking as a career, are you sure that it isn’t the job that’s the problem and not the profession? Why don’t you try another establishment or environment — restaurant, bake shop, catering company, or turn it into your own small business.

(And if you happen to have a knack for raspberry linzer tarts, I know a dessert taste tester who would be happy to sample your product. Just for quality control, of course.)
