Jay Slater’s father makes six-word plea to son at visit to site of search

The father of missing British teenager Jay Slater described his ordeal as “a living hell” as the search for his son in Tenerife extended into its second week.

Speaking to reporters in Santiago del Teide, approximately four miles (6.4km) from the search area, Warren Slater said: “I just want him found.”

Local police have said “nothing is ruled out” as the search for missing teenager continues a week after his disappearance.

The 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared in Tenerife following an attempt to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus.

He had attended the NRG music festival on the island with two friends before his disappearance.

New footage has now emerged which shows the teen dancing in a nightclub hours before he went missing. Mr Slater was seen in Papagayo club in Playa de las Américas in the early hours of Monday, according to an eyewitness.

The man, 20, said he was filming people dancing as he wanted to “remember the moment” of everyone having a good time. Speaking about Mr Slater, he said he “saw a lad staggering around in front of me”.

‘Narrow and dramatic drops’ surround main road

Holly Evans reports live from the scene in Masca, Tenerife:

The area is a difficult terrain to navigate, small paths wind off the main road into the mountains but they are narrow and dramatic drops open up unexpectedly on either side, she writes.

Once leaving the main road, the bushes are coarse and there are brambles and cacti everywhere, which is hampering the efforts of search teams and rescue workers.

Sue Sim, the former chief constable of Northumbria Police who led the high-profile search for Raoul Moat, told Sky News on Monday (24 June): “Having led massive inquiries of this type, please do not spend time putting things on social media. “The worst thing that people can do sitting at home in their armchairs is to speculate what might have happened.”

‘Hikers go missing every summer’: Tenerife locals speak to The Independent

Our reporter Holly Evans is in Tenerife speaking to locals and tourists about the search for Jay Slater, as the teenager remains missing over a week after his disappearance.

Speaking from a cafe located next to the main square, one local woman Anita told The Independent: “We often have hikers go missing, every summer it is the same.

“Police come for a week and search and then they go – sometimes it can take months for a body to be found as the mountains are too difficult to search.

“People have said there was a sighting of him here, but no one knows anything – his family come here but there’s nothing to show he is here, as far as I know no shop or cafe has seen him.”
