Rishi Sunak has played down warnings that Labour will win a “super-majority” following comments by one of his Cabinet colleagues.

Elsewhere, Lucy Letby, the former neonatal nurse who was convicted of the murder and attempted murder of a number of babies last year, is being retried on one charge at Manchester Crown Court.

Grant Shapps, the Defence Secretary, this morning warned voters “you don’t want to have somebody receive a super-majority” as he warned Sir Keir Starmer could be given carte blanche to do what he wanted by voters on July 4.

But asked about Mr Shapps’s remarks on the Tory election battle bus, the Prime Minister said: “The poll that matters is the one on July 4.”
