Prime Video hit Last One Laughing has proved to be an unexpected success for the streamer – and star Lou Sanders reckons that there’s a lot reality TV can learn from the comic competition. The series, which is currently number one in the streaming charts for Prime Video, sees ten comedians attempt to spend six hours in one room without laughing as they each try to make one another crack.

Stand-out star Lou, 46, tells The Mirror that the show’s success proves that viewers “don’t need conflict” that typically comes with reality TV series like I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and Big Brother. “We don’t need the cast to be outrageous – we can just let people be people,” she says.

“There doesn’t need to be a Nigel Farage-shaped bomb thrown in. It can just be people who get on and that’s intresting. Warm telly is not boring or cuddly – it is really fun and can be explosive in a different way that’s not hate-led.

“It doesn’t mean it’s boring or lacking in edge. It’s just lacking in hate – and we’ve got the internet for hate. TV should be a distraction.”

Lou admits that she’s “never been recognised so much” in her career thanks to the show – but reveals that she’s grateful that some scenes stayed on the cutting room floor.

“I actually emailed an exec yesterday and said, ‘Thanks so much fo rnot putting the bit in where I fart on Rob Beckett’s leg,” she laughs. “I don’t think that would have been good for business.

“It was done, if you can believe, in a classy way. I knew he would find it funny so it was tactical really. I had to do it – I’m there to win.”

Unfortunately, the high-risk move didn’t pay off – with Rob beating Lou to the final three. “The fact that he beat me and I still degraded myself – it’s not ideal. We’d all gone mad at that point.”

While Lou had the best time on the show, she admits that the cast – which includes the likes of Richard Ayoade, Bob Mortimer, Daisy May Cooper and Judi Love – haven’t spent much time together since.

“Everyone’s so busy so they just go back to their lives,” she says. “It’s so sad actually. I want season two, but I want all the same people. It’s the only way we hang out. I need to do a podcast so I can see my friends.”

Although Lou has a few plans up her sleeve with fellow contestant Harriet Kemsley. “I’d like to do a snowboarding show with Harriet but my agent read the treatment and said, ‘It sounds like you and Harriet just want to go snowboarding,’” she says.

“We’re both very clumsy and so we pitched this show where we would become chalet girls and make food for other comedians. I don’t know if TV at the moment wants me and Harriet to go on a six month holiday.”

Lou Sanders is currently on tour with her brand new stand-up show No Kissing in the Bingo Hall. For more tickets and info visit Lousanders.com. Last One Laughing is available on Prime Video.
