Liverpool have been reassured that a deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi will happen, despite the clubs reportedly being some distance apart in their valuations of the defender
Liverpool have been given hope in their pursuit of Marc Guehi following a claim that a deal is likely to be struck before the summer transfer window shuts. The Reds have initiated discussions with Crystal Palace about bringing the defender to Anfield.
However, the two clubs are yet to agree on a price, with a significant disparity between Liverpool’s valuation and what the Eagles are demanding. Palace are reported to want £45million for the centre-half, while the Premier League champions are sticking firm to their £35m offer, leaving a £10m gap to close.
Rumours about Guehi’s future, who is in the last year of his contract at Selhurst Park, ramped up over the weekend. It followed claims that the 25-year-old gave Palace boss Oliver Glasner the cold shoulder on the pitch after their goalless draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, although this has since been dismissed as a misunderstanding.

Ex-Manchester United and Wrexham shot-stopper Ben Foster is confident that Guehi’s move to Liverpool will materialise, despite the difference in valuation between the two clubs. However, the former England international has criticised the player’s approach to the situation, accusing him of throwing a strop to force the move.
Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: «It’s horrible and you know there’s something big going on behind the scenes. I would be expecting to see Mark Guehi signing for Liverpool within the next week or two.
«I really, really would, because that is a very public falling out. That’s the way that it goes, though, nowadays. Obviously the only way to get a move is by throwing your toys out of the pram.»
Guehi has more than 100 Premier League appearances to his name, with Liverpool believed to be eager to bolster the centre of their backline. His future was addressed by Glasner during the week, alongside that of Eberechi Eze, who appears poised to join Arsenal after snubbing Tottenham.
«Most of you will be surprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours,» said Glasner. «But they are committed here and they will play a crucial part.»
Tackling questions regarding his relationship with Guehi, he added: «I’ve seen so much nonsense written about this. Marc was upset that he didn’t win the game and I loved this. It’s the best sign that he could show of how ambitious we are.»
Despite Glasner’s remarks, Palace are reportedly scouting potential successors for Guehi. The Eagles have placed Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez on their radar, whilst also maintaining keen interest in Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande.
Earlier this month, Palace co-owner Steve Parish conceded that there was a possibility Guehi could be sold in the summer.
Speaking after the Community Shield at Wembley, he said: «Yes. Of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem for a football club. There is no doubt about it, unfortunately.
«Joachim [Andersen] went and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them. We then had another bid in January, but that was a difficult situation as well. We will just have to see what happens. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.»
