Have you ever wondered if the way you do your makeup is secretly aging you?
Perhaps it’s with dated skinny brows or cakey makeup – or maybe you’ve been avoiding using cream products, because you think they’ll look too oily.
FEMAIL reached out to beauty experts to find out the beauty mistakes that just might be making you look older, and what to do instead.
‘When it comes to complexion, less is more and the key to coverage is to be strategic in placement and what products you are using,’ makeup artist Nydia Figueroa said.
Rose-Marie Swift, the legendary celebrity makeup artist who founded clean beauty brand RMS, agreed that ‘less is more always, but especially as you age.’

Ditch your heavy makeup
Nydia proposed more mature women use a sheer to medium coverage based that won’t accentuate texture like the PÜR Beauty 4-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer.
New York City-based makeup artist Drita Paljevic said the biggest mistake she saw was ‘using and applying a lot of makeup, resulting in makeup that looks cakey.’
Instead, she recommends ‘prepping and moisturizing your skin according to your skin type,’ and with the idea that ‘less is more.
Drita, who’s the head makeup artist at Kevyn Aucoin, suggested ‘switching out the heavy foundation with a more sheer foundation and only applying it to areas where it’s needed.’
‘The key to youthful skin is a glow and matte or powder finishes take that away,’ Rose-Marie, who often shares makeup tips for mature skin on Instagram, told FEMAIL.
‘Heavy foundations can accent fine lines and wrinkles very easily.’
Instead, Rose-Marie prefers a tinted moisturizer or a light foundation applied with a wet sponge for extra hydration, using her brand’s UnCoverup Concealer under the eyes and on areas that need a little coverage for a dewy, youthful look.

Swap your powders for cream
You might think it’s best to avoid cream-based products as you age, but these makeup artists say it’s actually best to embrace them for a healthy glow.
‘Avoid using too many powder products, as this type of finish tends to accentuate fine lines,’ Drita explained.
‘Cream and liquid products are best for mature skin, which will give you a dewy finish that is on trend right now.’
Rose-Marie explained, ‘Your skin gets drier as you get older, which is why cream based products are a must for mature skin.’
‘Creams give the added hydration and, when applied minimally, can knock years off the age of the skin,’ Rose-Marie promised, advising that it’s also best to switch to a cream blush.
‘Mature women need moisture and dewiness always, because healthy, hydrated skin is beautiful skin.’

Nydia told FEMAIL that wearing lashes that overwhelm your eye shapes was one of the biggest mistakes older women can make

Another way to open up your eyes is by avoiding frosty shades or using them in moderation
Open up your eyes
Nydia told FEMAIL that wearing lashes that overwhelm your eye shapes was one of the biggest mistakes older women could make.
Nydia explained that while lashes ‘are a great way to open up your eye and give it a much-needed lift,’ if you opt for false lashes that are too heavy or long, they’ll ‘drag down the eye and age you quickly.’
Nydia’s a fan of Ardell Naked Press on Pre Glued Under Lash extensions, which is what she uses on mature clients, because ‘it gives a subtle lift that comes from under the lash, is easy to use, and gives a natural look to the lashes.’
Another way to open up your eyes is by avoiding frosty shades or using them in moderation.
‘If you add a frosty shade on brow bone or across your lids it will date you instead of compliment you,’ Nydia warned.
Instead, Nydia suggested using a frosted shade on the inner corners of the eyes to open them up without being overstated or as a finish for a glow without being too harsh.
Rose-Marie said heavy lashes age women because they looked ‘so clearly fake’ and ‘will only make your lids look heavier.’
‘If you’re using fake lashes, it’s best to apply lashes that are not on a strip,’ Rose-Marie said, and added, ‘Get a more realistic looking pair of lashes, cut them into sections, and apply those sections individually.’

Celebrity eyebrow specialist Joey Healy, based in New York City, told DailyMail.com he’s a fan of Jane Fonda’s even brows

Joey approves of the way Helen Mirren 79, maintains full brows that are natural and well-groomed without being overpowering

Even if brow hairs become precious due to their scarcity, mindful trimming with scissors will help maintain a polished look,’ Joey instructed, with Diane Keaton as an example above
Keep your brows full
Celebrity eyebrow specialist Joey Healy, based in New York City, warned DailyMail.com that ‘overly thin brows can be misleading – they’re often thought to add lift, but in reality, a thin brow can actually age the face.’
‘As we get older, brows tend to thin, particularly at the front and on the tails, and they may turn gray or white, which can create a sparse, patchy appearance,’ Joey said.
‘Keeping brows fuller suggests youthfulness, much like how a bit of blush gives a natural, youthful flush to mature skin.’
He also advised that keeping brows full doesn’t mean ignoring them or not trimming them, because that could lead to them becoming coarse, wiry and unruly.
‘Even if brow hairs become precious due to their scarcity, mindful trimming with scissors will help maintain a polished look,’ the eyebrow pro instructed.
He also advocated for a tinted brow gel or professional tinting to make grays look uniform.
Joey approves of the way Jane Fonda, 86, Diane Keaton, 78, Helen Mirren 79, and Angela Bassett, 66, all maintain full brows that are natural and well-groomed without being overpowering.
