Earlier on Monday, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry announced an «operation» at Sputnik’s office in Baku.

«In connection with the unfriendly actions of Baku and the illegal detention of Russian journalists, against whom the Azerbaijani authorities have had no complaints all these years, the Azerbaijani ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry,» the ministry said.

In the afternoon, Baku announced that «an operation» was underway in the Baku office of Sputnik Azerbaijan».

Also, Azerbaijan’s security forces cordoned off the area in front of the Sputnik Azerbaijan office in Baku, Sputnik’s correspondent reported.

Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya, Sputnik’s parent media group, wrote in her Telegram channel:

“According to my information, employees of our Embassy in Baku are on their way to Sputnik’s office, where a ‘special operation’ is currently taking place. The employees have not contacted us—obviously, they have been denied access to their phones. There are Russian citizens among them.”

Sputnik’s editorial team has stated that they have not received any official bans on their work in Azerbaijan, and throughout this time, there has been a constructive dialogue between the working groups of the foreign ministries of both countries regarding the resolution of potential disagreements.

The Russian Human Rights Commission is monitoring the situation surrounding the editorial office of Sputnik Azerbaijan in Baku.

«The violation of international conventions and declarations by Azerbaijan’s security forces regarding journalists is causing confusion. We express concern over the violation of the rights of Russian journalists and hope for their swift release,» the commission said in a statement.
