A mum was left «fuming», after her 11-year-old daughter returned home from The Laurel Academy wearing a skirt and tights – despite leaving the house in trousers – all because her «ankles were showing»

A livid mum has branded her children’s secondary school as «out-of-order» after her daughter was made to wear a completely different uniform for allegedly violating the school’s dress code.

Paige Ellice Warr, 30, was left seething when her 11 year old daughter came home from The Laurel Academy wearing a skirt and tights – despite leaving the house in trousers – all because her «ankles were showing.»

Paige explained that her daughter, Taya-May, was compelled by teachers at the Mexborough academy to change her uniform, as the trousers she had worn to her Year 7 class had slightly shrunk in the wash.

Paige stated: «Taya started school on August 2 and had gotten dog hair on her uniform, so I had put her trousers in the wash. They had shrunk ever-so-slightly, but were the correct pair from the school shop so I didn’t think anything of it.

«But when Tay arrived home today, she told me that she had been stopped at the school gates because her socks were showing. The teachers made her change into a pair of tights and a skirt which is absolutely unbelievable to me. I am absolutely fuming that the school think they can just do that», reports Yorkshire Live.

Paige, a mother of two students at the school, expressed her frustration over the school’s «totally unreasonable» uniform code. She said: «My son, Trey, has just gone into Year 8 at the same school. He was made to change his socks because they were dark grey and not black. It’s stuff like that, that is really frustrating. I have just spent £400 on uniform to have to have all the correct logos – it’s cost me a fortune.»

She also voiced her concern about the unfair treatment of her daughter, Taya, on her second day of secondary school. Paige stated: «Starting a new school is already really overwhelming – to then be told you have to get changed is just really unfair. I am not one to kick off – but it’s her second day. The whole thing has me absolutely fuming.»

Taya’s tights were brand new, although it remains unclear whether the skirt was new or had been washed. Paige added: «It’s not fair to expect parents to buy all this uniform then send the kids away with random stuff.»

The Laurel Academy’s website states that «all students are expected to wear academy uniform at all times. SPT Uniforms are the approved provider of Delta uniform» including black tailored trousers at ankle length – not cropped , cargo or leggings.

A spokesperson from The Laurel Academy stated: «We have the highest expectations for what children can achieve and back this up with excellent teaching, high standards of uniform and conduct and a complete package of care, support and guidance for all the children and young people in our academy.

«We are delighted that our 2025 Year 11 students are celebrating the school’s best-ever GCSE results, with 83% of our Year 11 students achieving a level 4 in both English and Maths and 60% achieving a level 5 in both subjects. These are outstanding results and we are grateful to parents, carers and the local community for their continuing support.

«We are committed to making sure children are getting the first-class education they deserve, so they can take advantage of every opportunity and fulfil their potential. We believe this is the best preparation for their future challenges in the modern world of work or further or higher education.»
