A naturopathic doctor has revealed three things to do every morning to lead a healthier life.

The tips were shared in a new video posted to TikTok by Dr. Janine Bowring (@j9naturally), a naturopath based in Canada who has over 25 years of clinical research under her belt.

Dr. Bowring often uses TikTok to share advice about longevity and staying healthy with her 1.1 million followers and this video was no different.

‘To be healthy here are three things you must do every morning,’ she began.

‘Number one is go outside and if you can’t get outside, open a window especially as that sun is rising.

‘This is going to program your clock mechanisms in your brain and in all of your organs, all of the cells of your body – they do have these clock mechanisms.

‘You want them to be in tune with the light and dark cycle of the day- you gotta see that early morning light.’

These clocks are also known as circadian rhythm of your body and it affects your digestion, temperature regulation, and hormone release, per Healthline.

The ‘master clock’ is in the hypothalamus of your brain and helps determine the circadian rhythm. 

Where it’s located is called the suprachiasmatic nucleus [SCN] and it sends signals to other parts of your body and takes in information.

Light controls the SCN. Cells in the retina of your eyes capture changes in light and dark and send signals to the SCN. 

The SCN then activates certain hormones, alters your body temperature, and regulates your metabolism to keep you alert or draw you to sleep, per Healthline. 

Dr. Bowring’s second tip was to take off your shoes to get ‘grounded.’

‘This is like basically putting your body into a battery charger,’ she explained.

‘You’ve got to be connected to the sunlight and the earth at the same time.’

According to Healthline, grounding yourself has benefits that include better balance which can help with pain relief, and improvements in foot mechanics which can help with the other areas of the body including your hips, knees, and core.

Another tip was to eat breakfast between sunrise and when the UVA rises to better your digestion (stock image)

Finally, Dr. Bowring advised people to: ‘Eat your first meal of the day, so usually your breakfast, between sunrise and when the UVA rises.’

She suggested checking when the UVA rises with apps on your phone to make sure we ‘see exactly what that window of opportunity is for your best digestion for your breakfast.’

Vitamin D is important for gut health specifically for people with IBS who have been shown to suffer from low vitamin D levels, per ProVen Probiotics.

Our circadian rhythm – which has connections to sunlight – is also linked to our microbiome. 

Scientists have discovered a connection between exposure to sunlight and direct changes in our gut microbiome.

However, it’s not currently clear if the link is dependent on or independent of vitamin D, per ProVen Probiotics.
