An aggravated Netflix user was shocked to learn that subscribers to the streaming platform can’t watch certain movies or shows unless they upgrade their memberships.

The user shared a TikTok video expressing his frustration, declaring that ‘Netflix is dead.’

‘You can’t watch stuff if you’re not paying for the non-ad standard plan,’ the user, @JustGourm, said.

He explained that Netflix subscribers need to pay at least $15.49 if they want access to all shows and movies on the platform.

Other TikTok users who watched his video were similarly upset over the streamer’s membership price hikes.

‘I canceled them when they did the last price increase. These streaming companies have lost their minds,’ one commenter wrote.

‘Didn’t this use to be 5 bucks a month with actual enjoyable shows and movies,’ another added.

‘Let’s all agree to just go back to cable,’ a third wrote.

Despite subscriber anger, over 8 million subscribers joined Netflix during the second quarter of 2024 (April 1 to June 30).

The streamer is expecting its third-quarter subscriber numbers be lower than last year due to its crackdown on password sharing.

Some TikTok commenters compared the price of streaming platforms to that of cable television.

‘With the increases I went from about $18 a month to over $50 for a couple of streaming services. It’s not really worth the money anymore,’ one said.

Another added: ‘That’s why I buy dvds, or wait till it’s on Tubi. If I’m desperate I’ll find it online somewhere.’

Netflix explained the reason behind its decision to lock some content to certain subscribers.

‘While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,’ a note on the platform’s website reads.

‘These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.’

Some Netflix users have been complaining about locked content since last year.

‘I’m cool with a little bit of ads if it saves me half the price I used to pay, but dang…there’s a good bit of movies locked on that tier,’ one user on X posted in July 2023.

Netflix offers three plans: Standard with ads, Standard, and Premium.

The $6.99-a-month Standard with ads plan allows streamers to watch Netflix content on two devices at the same time, with ‘all but a few movies and TV shows available.’

The Standard plan costs $15.49 a month and permits a subscriber to watch unlimited ad-free movies and TV shows. The user  can add one member who doesn’t live with them to their account.

The Premium plan allows a subscriber to stream Netflix on four devices simultaneously, and the user has the option to add two members to their account.

Streamers who want a Premium accounts must spend at least $22.99 a month.

Account holders who want to add extra viewers can do so if they pay an additional $7.99 a month.
