A 2023 Netflix spy thriller series was so popular in its debut season that it has already been greenlit for season three, months before the second has even premiered.

Netflix announced The Night Agent‘s second will be returning later than expected – in winter 2025 featuring ten episodes.

The show’s creator, Shawn Ryan, told Tudum: ‘We’re so excited that our fans will get to watch Season 2 of in early 2025, and we’ve been hard at work writing Season 3 to deliver more breathless Peter Sutherland Night Action adventures to our rabid audience.’

The thriller show was 2023’s most-watched series by viewers and is the seventh most popular English-language show of all time.

Season 1 received 98.2 million views in its first 91 days and reached the number one spot on Netflix’s top ten in 87 countries, reported Tudum.

Based on a novel by Matthew Quirk, the show follows a low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland, who is played by Gabriel Basso.

Sutherland works within the White House basement and mans a phone that never rings, until it eventually does. He then becomes part of a conspiracy within the White House and makes efforts to uncover a mole.

The end of season one saw Sutherland on a jet heading to his first night agent mission. This promotion was the reward for ‘unraveling a terrorist conspiracy within the walls of the White House’ and saving President Michelle Travers life, who is played by Kari Matchett.

His love interest, former Silicon Valley CEO Rose Larkin who is played by Luciane Buchanan, was seen walking across the tarmac to the jet before Sutherland heads off on his next mission.

Many viewers were left wondering, what comes next for the couple? Which is one of the ‘big questions we’d love to answer’, Ryan told Tudum.

The show’s upcoming seasons are following Sutherlands journey entering the world of a Night Agent, Tudum said: ‘Working in the secretive organization of Night Action will push Peter into a world where danger is everywhere, and trust is in short supply.’

Ryan said: ‘To see tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix.’

He added: ‘We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season 2 to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.’

Season two saw a list of new names added to the cast list including Arienne Mandi, Britanny Snow, Louis Herthum, Berto Colon and Teddy Sears.

Production for Season three is set to begin in Istanbul at the end of this year and due to return to New York in 2025.
