Tony Romo sparked a backlash from some NFL supporters after his gushing comments about former president George W. Bush live on air.

The former Cowboys quarterback was behind the microphone for Dallas’ 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Bush, who served two terms in the White House between 2001 and 2009, was among the crowd at AT&T Stadium.

When the former president was captured by TV cameras, Romo heaped praise on the 78-year-old.

‘He’s also very impressive,’ Romo said. ‘He loves sports, he loves America, one of the great human beings you’ll ever meet.’

His comments drew criticism from many fans, who reminded Romo that Bush was in charge when the US went to war in Iraq.

‘Tony Romo waxing on and on about George W Bush has me ready to vomit,’ one said.

‘»He loses his sports & he loves his country.» (You) forgot to say «he loves endless wars and the military industrial complex».’

Another fan added, ‘That should tell you all you need to know about Romo,’ while a third mocked the former quarterback. ‘He’s a great guy….if you love war,’ they wrote.

Bush was at the game alongside his wife – and former first lady – Laura, with NBC announcer Jim Nantz explaining that the couple always attend ‘Salute to Service’ weekend.

They performed the coin toss at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, before the Eagles condemned the Cowboys to a sixth loss in nine games this season.
