A view from Westminster

Dominic Penna, Political Correspondent

After more than a month on the trail, we have entered the final full week of the general election campaign – and the strategies Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are pursuing could hardly be more different.

Having thrown a lot more at the wall in terms of policy, Sunak is now preoccupied with warning voters not to hand Labour a “blank cheque”, while Starmer is continuing with his “Ming Vase” strategy, keeping his pledges broad and seeking to avoid any missteps or major commitments.

Many Tory candidates are already resigned to defeat but the Prime Minister today insisted he did not make a mistake calling an early election. As both men prepare for a live grilling from Sun readers, it is Starmer with significantly more to lose – although Sunak has a lot to do to pull off a respectable Tory showing next Thursday.
