Official figures, published on Thursday, showed that 67,978 asylum claims were granted by the Home Office in the year to June – more than triple the 21,436 in the previous year. Home Office caseworkers made just under 92,000 initial decisions on asylum claims in the year – the highest level in two decades.

The former footballer, 41, has been removed from the BBC One evening programme following an internal investigation by the corporation because of alleged complaints about his behaviour, The Sun has reported. Jenas had been touted by some as a long-term replacement for Gary Lineker on Match of the Day.
