Earlier in the day, Sky News reported that Sunak could call the general elections in the country for July 4. «Earlier today I spoke with his majesty the King to request the dissolution of parliament. The King has granted me this request and we will have a general election on 4th of July,» Sunak said in a statement outside 10 Downing Street .The current UK Parliament will be dissolved on May 30, while the new convocation will convene on July 9, The Telegraph reported, citing a statement issued by 10 Downing Street.The state opening of parliament will reportedly take place on July 17.Last week, Sunak said that he would stay on as a member of UK parliament and continue to represent the constituency of Richmond in North Yorkshire, even if the ruling Conservative Party lost the next general election.
