So what should buyers look out for? Coffee expert Tom says to consider how quickly you want your morning cup. No-frills basic makers have an on/off button to get the caffeine hit quick, whereas upmarket ranges with pre-programme options can be useful if you need to get out of the door swiftly.
Other considerations include whether you prefer a hot plate or an insulated jug to keep drinks warm. For Tom, the key factors are budget and coffee knowledge.
“If you don’t consider yourself a serious hobbyist then you don’t need to spend that much,” he says. “What’s more important is the quality of coffee beans you use and how freshly they have been ground.” Investing in a brewer which allows you to control variables such as temperature, flow rate and basket size, might be more suitable for a serious coffee geek, he adds. Those machines generally come at a higher price.
