What are the key differences between an integrated and freestanding dishwasher?

Integrated dishwashers are nearly always a standard size: 82cm high, 60cm wide and 56cm deep. This is slightly smaller than the typical freestanding dishwasher. Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic & General, points out: “Freestanding dishwashers generally hold a larger load, since integrated appliances are restricted by available space.”

Freestanding models are also simpler to install and move, making them ideal for renters or anyone who might relocate, and they are usually more affordable. However, integrated dishwashers offer a flush fit within cabinetry, ideal for modern or open-plan kitchens. Additionally, their cabinet door provides noise insulation, so they tend to operate more quietly.

What door panel should I use for an integrated Dishwasher?

For an integrated dishwasher, your door panel choice is crucial for a proper fit and seamless look. According to Ian Palmer-Smith, a standard integrated dishwasher typically requires a 596mm door, while slimline models need a 715mm x 446mm panel, and semi-integrated dishwashers (on which the control panel is visible at the top) require 570mm x 596mm doors.

Importantly, these door panels must be undrilled to allow for precise alignment with the dishwasher’s fixing points. Many opt for a matching cabinet panel to maintain the kitchen’s cohesive style. But ensure that the door’s measurements align with your appliance type for a flush, integrated finish.

What are the disadvantages of an integrated dishwasher?

As Ian Palmer-Smith from Domestic & General notes, “The downside of integrated dishwashers is needing to remove and re-attach the cabinet door if you ever change or replace the appliance.” This process can be time-consuming, especially for those who want a quick installation.

Integrated models are also generally more expensive than freestanding options, which may not suit every budget. Additionally, once fitted, they’re not as easy to move so if you’re renting or planning a move, a freestanding dishwasher might be more practical.

What is the difference between a fully integrated and semi integrated dishwasher?

The primary difference between a fully integrated and a semi-integrated dishwasher lies in the visibility of the control panel. Ian Palmer-Smith from Domestic & General explains, “Fully integrated dishwashers will have controls on the top edge of the door, making them invisible when closed. Semi-integrated dishwashers will have the control panel exposed.” This makes semi-integrated models slightly easier to access for settings and monitoring cycles, but doesn’t deliver the same completely hidden look as fully integrated designs.

What you need to think about before buying an integrated dishwasher

“If you have an idea of where you’d like to fit your dishwasher, measure the height, width, and depth of the available space,” says Matt Ayres, an appliances expert at RDO Kitchen and Appliances

“If you are a single professional or couple, with a small to medium-sized kitchen, a 45cm wide dishwasher could hold enough capacity. Larger families or those with more space in their kitchen may choose a 60cm wide dishwasher.

“Account for any additional cables and pipes, as these may take up some extra room behind the machine. Also check the fitting of your kitchen cabinets’ kickboards, as these typically sit further in than the rest of your kitchen unit. As your dishwasher will be placed behind this, you’ll need to ensure that the bottom of your dishwasher fits in this space.

“Lastly, a sturdy and level floor is essential. Due to the doors of your cabinet and the dishwasher, if the floor is not level or tends to sink, the dishwasher may shift position after installation. This could cause the doors to catch, making loading and unloading difficult.

Next, ensure there is a suitable power source available. Most dishwasher power cables are approximately 1-2 meters long. It’s best practice and much safer to plug larger appliances directly into the electricity plug, instead of using extension leads.

“If the place you intend placing your dishwasher does not have a suitable power source, you may want to chose an alternative location. If your budget allows, and your chosen space is the only option, you can also get a new socket fitted by a professional for your integrated dishwasher.

“One key consideration when choosing the most suitable appliance is its energy efficiency. Look for machines with an A, B, or C energy rating for the most efficient energy consumption, such as the Siemens IQ 300 integrated dishwasher in the 45cm category or the Miele G500 dishwasher in the 60cm category.

“Looking for features such as Eco Power technology and half-load functions, which allow you to use your dishwasher in the most sustainable and energy-efficient way. Families with smaller children may want to invest in a dishwasher with a Child lock function, while busy professionals may want to opt for a dishwasher with Home Connect technology. This will allow you to control your appliance with your phone or tablet.

Finally, once you have chosen your dishwasher, the installation process is also extremely important. It’s always best to use an appliance company that offers installation services to ensure your appliance is fitted safely and seamlessly while ensuring required cabinetry modifications and plumbing are also taken care of.”
