A popular discount grocery store chain plans to open more than 225 locations in the US this year.
Aldi, the fastest-growing grocer in the US, confirmed it would open the stores as part of its five-year national growth strategy.
This is the highest number of Aldi store openings in one year in US operations history, according to a February 7 press release.
But the move may feel like a loss for lovers of the beloved Southern grocery chain Winn-Dixie.
The locations will be opening through the business operation expansion and the conversion of select Winn-Dixie and Harvey Supermarket stores.
Aldi’s update comes after the brand sold Winn Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets’ parent organization, Southeastern Grocers, to C&S Wholesale Grocers earlier this month.
‘When we announced our acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting ALDI growth,’ said Aldi CEO Jason Hart.

‘Over the last year, we’ve seen firsthand how C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers and their teams have continued to deliver great quality, service and value to their customers, and we are confident they will lead the company successfully into its next chapter.’
Aldi first announced its five-year national growth strategy in March 2024 after acquiring Southeastern Grocers.
With this acquisition, Aldi gained around 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets.
‘This transaction allows Aldi to create a focused conversion portfolio in the Southeast as it progresses its expansion plans across the country,’ the chain said in a statement last year.
Following the acquisition, Aldi announced its plans to open 800 US stores by the end of 2028.
The grocery store chain is investing over $9 billion into the strategy.
Aldi intends to add nearly 330 of the 800 stores in the Northeast and Midwest US regions, and increase locations in California and Arizona.
‘Aldi continues to see more shoppers come through our doors as they experience our quicker, easier and more affordable shopping experience firsthand,’ said Hart.
‘With our expansion across the country, Aldi is earning the trust of more shoppers in more communities than ever before, bringing us closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries.’

Aldi reported in its January 14 price leadership report that it has the lowest prices of any nationwide grocer
Aldi confirmed its dedication to making customers happy in its January 14 price leadership report.
The grocery chain reported it has the lowest prices of any nationwide grocer.
‘We now know Aldi can save shoppers up to 36% on an average household’s shopping list. For a family of four, that’s nearly $4,000 a year,’ Hart said in the report.
A recent survey reported by Aldi indicated that nine in 10 of over 2,000 participants said the grocer helps them stay within budget.
‘We are proud of, and energized by, these findings and know there’s much more work to be done,’ the report read.
As of now, nearly 50,000 individuals work at one of over 2,400 Aldi stores in the US.
