A trichologist has revealed why there’s no such thing as a ‘quick fix’ for getting longer hair – and why those fancy hair oils won’t help.

The wisdom was shared on TikTok by the iconic haircare brand Philip Kingsley, which offers treatments for scalp health and hair loss and has clinics in both London and New York City.

In the clip, Glenn Lyons, clinical director of the Philip Kingsley Trichological Clinic in London, explained why you can’t grow out your hair in the blink of an eye.

In the beginning of the video, Lyons admitted that there’s no way to increase how much your hair grows.

Lyons revealed the average growth rate is around 1.5 centimeters a month, which is proven by people who color their hair and ‘within a month they’ve got regrowth.’

Healthy hair starts with what you eat

According to Healthline, ensuring you are getting essential vitamins and minerals will contribute to healthy hair

The outlet suggested that omega-3 and DHA may help hair growth

You can get these vitamins by eating foods packed with omega-3’s, like fish, nuts and seeds, or even supplements

While it can be tempting to try hair growth oils, especially since many people swear by them, the trichologist said it’s best to be wary.

‘Natural oils could help the condition [but] I believe actually the most important thing on hair and skin is moisture levels,’ Lyons said – however, he warned that this won’t speed up the growth of your hair, but rather help to maintain a natural rate of growth.

He explained that there are certain things that can aid in hair growth, including maintaining a healthy scalp and making sure your hair has as little breakage as possible.

To prevent breakage, Lyons suggested using the proper brushes, not over-drying, and not getting too much sun on the hair.

Surprisingly, using certain types of hand-held scalp massagers can also damage your hair, something that Lyons spoke about in a February video.

He explained that massaging your head can cause breakage if done too vigorously.

Using your fingers is the best option for scalp massage, Lyons said, and it should be done for five to seven minutes, as you guide your finger tips in slow, circular movements.

If you feel like scalp massagers are the best way to cleanse your scalp of dandruff or oils, there are certain ones to look out for.

The expert suggested opting for a scalp massager that has spread-out spikes, rather than lots of small ones that are close together and moving it slowly around your head.

When the plastic prongs are particularly harsh, the scalp can become irritated and even bleed.

However, overall, Lyons admitted that the benefits of scalp massages are quite minimal.

With the right vitamins and a healthy scalp, your hair will look better than ever – just don’t get conned by expensive oils that don’t work.
