Santorini and Mykonos are two of the most popular Greek islands but there are many more just waiting to be discoverd that wont have you pushing past crowds and tourists – here they are
The Greek islands are one of Brits’ favourite holiday destinations to travel to, with its blue skies, exciting beaches, amazing restaurants and iconic buildings. It goes without saying that Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes are the top Greek islands that come to mind when choosing the perfect summer destination.
But as these destinations are so popular, they often attract large crowds that can deter travellers looking for a quieter destination. There are a range of smaller islands within the Greek coast which still let you experience the culture and scenery of the town without the hustle and bustle that you avoid when on holiday.
One island is Tilos, which lies in between Kos and Rhodes in the Aegean Sea. The island is one of the smallest with around 746 people and doesnt have as many tourists nor the recognition it deserves. The capital of the Tilos is Megalo Chorio, which is located at the bottom of Merovigli mountain.
The top of the mountain is home to a medieval castle called the ‘Castle of Knights’. The island is known for its herbs and the hometown of famous Greek poet Irinna alongside its relaxing beaches and villages.

Chios is the fifth largest island in Greece, the tenth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and attracts many tourists in its main town, but has many quieter and lesser-known villages. It is a destination that covers all the different tastes of why one would go on holiday. There is a large range of entertainment choices when it comes to the island, such as restaurants, cafes, and small bars. Travel guide Greeka said: “Chios is a very beautiful island that is still quite untouched by tourism despite its various beauties such as its wonderful beaches and its superb medieval villages. Low tourism is due to the fact that Chios was economically self-sufficient for many years.
«The tranquillity and authenticity of Chios, along with its varied and verdant landscape, its fine villages and its idyllic beaches make this island an excellent holiday destination.»
Amorgos is regarded as one of the best islands to visit in Greece. There are amazing crystal-clear views for sight-seeing as it’s a volcanic and monotonous island. There is no direct flight to the island, instead travelling to Santorini and then taking a ferry is a travellers best bet.
One traveller who took this route wrote: “Every year we book our Greek island ferries through Greece and every year I’m impressed with their service. Text messages promptly if any changes occur, and extremely friendly people to help with any changes required, especially last minute which can sometimes happen in Greece. The site is also easy and clear to use. We’re big fans,” he wrote.
Samos is another popular destination that has a population of 33,000 people and has a lot of relaxing spots. The Mikri Lakka Beach is a top spot for tourists to lie along the sandy coast and sea and take in its natural beauty. Discover Greece said about the beach: “It’s one of the smaller and most secluded beaches in Samos, protected from the wind and with fine pebbles and shells and calm blue waters.”
