Universal Pictures has landed the rights to Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me» and will develop a biopic of the pop star.
ADVERTISEMENTFollowing a competitive auction, Universal Pictures obtained the movie rights to Britney Spears’ best-selling memoir «The Woman in Me», which has sold over 2.5 million copies since its release last October.
The rights deal reportedly received interest from Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, Sony, Warner Bros, Fox, Disney and Netflix.
Marc Platt, the producer behind Wicked and La La Land, will produce the film, with Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) set to direct.
Spears herself celebrated the news on X, tweeting, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.”
In her memoir, Spears, 42, chronicles her journey from «The Mickey Mouse Club» to global pop stardom, detailing her struggles with the conservatorship that ended in 2021.
The memoir, sales of which were boosted by an audiobook narrated by Michelle Williams, also reveals that Spears had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake over 20 years ago.
Music biopics have been one of Hollywood’s most popular genres in recent years, with recent films about Elvis, Elton John, Amy Winehouse and Bob Marley.
Upcoming releases include A Complete Unknown, with Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, and a Michael Jackson biopic due out next year.
The Beatles are also poised to receive the silver screen treatment not just once, but in a Fab Four of movies – one from each band member’s perspective. Leading the insanely ambitious cinematic endeavour is Sir Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning director behind films like American Beauty, 1917, and two James Bond’s, Skyfall and Spectre.
