A humpback whale entangled in fishing gear was rescued after a four-day operation in the Hecate Strait off British Columbia.

A humpback whale entangled in fishing gear was rescued after a four-day operation in the Hecate Strait off British Columbia.

Paul Cottrell from Fisheries and Oceans Canada led the rescue involving over 50 rope cuts to free the 11-meter whale.

Meanwhile, a 20-meter fin whale was found dead in Prince Rupert Harbour, possibly due to blunt force trauma.

Experts warn that increasing maritime traffic, particularly due to the LNG Canada project, heightens the risks for whales in northern British Columbia waters.

LNG Canada is a joint venture led by Shell to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, involving partners Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Korea Gas.
