A series of explosions at a Bulgarian fireworks factory on Thursday left one person dead and injured another, according to local authorities and medical personnel.

The explosions started at about 6.30 pm local time, in the village of Elin Pelin, close to Sofia, the capital. Residents reported that some explosions formed mushroom clouds in the evening sky, while others burst into red and white fireworks.

Locals also told the media that smaller explosions persisted during the night and into Friday morning.

Authorities say they have cordoned off the farmland and deployed military helicopters above the site.
