Hundreds of Mapuche Indigenous people and supporters marched through Santiago on Monday, marking the Day of the Encounter of Two Worlds and commemorating 532 years since Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.

The march, which highlights Indigenous resistance and the historic taking of their lands, turned violent when some protesters clashed with police, throwing stones and banging on water cannon vehicles.

Police responded with water cannons to disperse the crowd. Several participants also waved Palestinian flags in solidarity with the people of Gaza and the West Bank.

It is not the first time the march turned violent.

In 2021, a law student died after being hit by a firework launched by a protester during a confrontation with police.
