In a rare and unexpected twist of weather, Turkey’s capital, Ankara, woke up to a snowy surprise on Friday, as an unseasonal flurry blanketed the city in white despite the arrival of spring.
Snow began falling in the early morning hours, quickly turning streets, cars, and rooftops into a winter wonderland, catching residents off guard as they anticipated April flowers rather than snow.
Governor Vasip Şahin announced a one-day closure of schools and granted administrative leave for certain public employees. Snow removal teams were dispatched across the city as a precaution.
While the snowfall disrupted daily routines, it brought a welcome boost to Ankara’s water reserves, which had been critically low at just 26.19% capacity, with only 16.20% considered usable.
