Liverpool were finally confirmed as Premier League champions on Sunday as the Reds thumped Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield and Virgil van Dijk has spoken after claiming his second medal
Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool thoroughly deserve the Premier League title after finally being confirmed as champions. The Reds were crowned as league winners on Sunday as they thumped Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield.
It was the culmination of a brilliant campaign for the Reds, who have been by far and away the best side in the division throughout the season. And Liverpool captain Van Dijk believes his side have certainly earned the fruits of their labour.
Speaking after Sunday’s win at Anfield, the Dutch defender said: «It’s special and something we don’t take for granted. It’s amazing what today was. A lot of emotions before the game. We got the job done and truly deserved champions of England.»
Van Dijk now has two Premier League winners’ medals in his glittering collection. And he could potentially add to that over the coming years having penned a new long-term deal with the Reds just weeks ago. Asked if the prospect of silverware convinced him to commit his future to Liverpool, he replied: «This is the most beautiful club in the world. I think we deserve all of this. We are going to enjoy the next couple of weeks and let it sink in.»
And Van Dijk has made clear that Liverpool’s title – the 20th in their history – is going to be marked by players and fans alike having had their previous opportunity cruelly robbed from them during the Covid-19 pandemic.

«I was desperate to win it for them [the fans] and all the fans around the world, and for us as well,» Van Dijk said. «We have won two Premier League trophies in five years so that’s a really good achievement.»
Liverpool and Van Dijk will certainly be aiming to round off their successful season in style over the coming weeks. They are next back in action against Chelsea next weekend, ahead of a showdown with Arsenal.
Brighton are Liverpool’s penultimate opponents, while they are due to round their campaign off against Crystal Palace at Anfield – a game in which they will finally get to lift the trophy.

Away from Van Dijk, Arne Slot also spoke out after being confirmed as a Premier League champion. And he could not praise his players enough for their efforts.
He said: «It was clear we couldn’t lose this game. Everyone on the bus said there’s no way we’re going to lose this game. They always find a way to win.
«Incredibly proud, not only of the players but the people standing here, sport directors, my staff members, we should give them a big round of applause. Let’s forget it’s the second in 35 years, it’s the second in five years.»
