Woman, 81, who died walking through village named as dangerous driver arrested

A pedestrian who died after being struck by a car on Sunday evening has been named by police, following the arrest of a 23-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

The name and picture of an elderly woman who tragically died after being hit by a car while walking through a village have been released by police.

The 81-year-old, now named as Sheena McKerrell, was out walking in the picturesque village of Haworth, West Yorkshire, on Sunday when she was hit. The incident took place at around 5.35pm at the junction of Ivy Bank Lane and Bridgehouse Lane, with onlookers reportedly rushing to the woman’s aid.

The road was closed and a police cordon was erected while emergency services attempted to save her life. However, after several hours, Sheena McKerrell, who lived eight miles away in Hebden Bridge, tragically died.

West Yorkshire Police arrested a 23-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

After being held in police custody, he was released on bail, Monday (April 7).

Speaking to the Telegraph and Argus, local Cllr Rebecca Poulsen said: «My first thoughts are with the lady who tragically passed and her family and friends.

«I’d like to pass on my thanks to the emergency services and residents who helped give emergency aid. It must have been quite distressing for them.

«The people who were present were shocked and upset.»

Officers from the Major Collision Enquiry Team are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dash cam footage of the incident or prior to the incident to please come forward.
