A toxic mercury scare sent hazardous materials crews scrambling across Riverside County on Saturday after the dangerous metal was reported at multiple locations.
Firefighters were dispatched around 11:24 a.m. to the 24000 block of Magnolia Street in Wildomar, where reports of mercury prompted a response from Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department.
The Riverside County Hazardous Materials Team and county environmental health officials joined the response, assessing each reported location to determine whether the discoveries were isolated or part of a broader incident.
Authorities identified the substance as mercury, a potent neurotoxin and cellular poison that can pose health risks through exposure to its vapors or direct contact.
Officials emphasized there was no ongoing threat to nearby residents, and no evacuations were ordered.
Authorities have not released any additional details, including how the mercury was discovered or how many locations were affected, as the investigation continues.
