A promising PhD student who vanished during a solo hike in California’s Eastern Sierra has been found dead days later after a frantic search.
Vikram Mubayi, a chemical engineering doctoral candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was reported missing after his family lost contact with him during a weekend trip to the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest.
Shortly after, Mubayi’s brother—writing under the Reddit username u/rudeasbench—posted a tragic update online: “Thank you to everyone here for the support, unfortunately he was found deceased.”
Mubayi’s last contact with his family was around 8:37 p.m. on Aug. 1.
The post said Mubayi was hiking near Agassiz Col, while his vehicle remained at the trailhead.
He was carrying a Garmin satellite device and had shared his GPS coordinates.
When he failed to return and communication stopped, his family reported him missing to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office.
Inyo County Search and Rescue personnel and the California Highway Patrol joined the search.
Mubayi’s remains were recovered Aug. 3 in the Big Pine Lakes area.
His family was later informed that he had died.
Authorities have not released a cause or manner of death.
Investigators said there is currently no evidence of foul play, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Mubayi was a PhD candidate in UCSB’s Department of Chemical Engineering and worked in the O’Malley Lab.
His research focused on anaerobic bacteria that can break down lignin, a tough component of plant matter.
His work explored using bacteria and biological processes to turn plant waste and plastics into more sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based materials.
He also served as a teaching assistant and mentor.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022.
He worked there as a research assistant and teaching assistant.
A university yearbook profile said he hoped to apply chemical and biological engineering to environmental sustainability and climate change.
Mubayi was also passionate about hiking, tennis and cycling.
In 2022, he rode from New York to San Francisco with Illini 4000, a student-led nonprofit, to raise money for cancer research and patient support services.
