Slack and Away founders fetch $30M for Aspen mansion

Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Away co-founder Jen Rubio have unloaded their sprawling Aspen estate for $30 million — just weeks after the former tech power couple announced their separation.

The six-bedroom Colorado mansion sold earlier this month, according to property records cited by the Wall Street Journal, bringing in $5 million more than the pair paid for it in 2021.

The buyers were identified by The Post as David and Erika Sands through a special warranty deed recorded Oct. 14 with the Pitkin County Clerk and Recorder.

Specifically, the Las Vegas-based pair appear to be former professional poker players David “Doc” Sands and Erika Moutinho Sands, who famously finished back-to-back at the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event, placing 30th and 29th, respectively.

But the sale came at a steep discount from the former couple’s original asking price.

The roughly 10,600-square-foot home at 864 Moore Drive in Aspen’s exclusive Five Trees neighborhood first hit the market in June 2025 for $45 million before its price was slashed to $39.5 million, according to Zillow.

The property went into contract on Aug. 14, roughly a week after Butterfield and Rubio publicly revealed they were going their separate ways.

“With deep love and respect for one another, we’ve made the decision to separate,” the pair wrote in a joint Instagram announcement in August. “We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary life we share, and we step into what comes next with optimism and light.”

A spokesperson for the former pair told the Journal that the sale was unrelated to their separation and that neither has plans to sell additional properties.

Perched on approximately 5 acres overlooking Castle Creek Valley, the estate was completed in 2013 and boasts sweeping mountain views.

The sprawling residence features a home theater, a fitness center, a bar and a billiards area, along with a wine cellar and a tasting room, according to marketing materials from when the couple purchased it.

The sale marks the latest chapter in the pair’s extensive real estate history, which has included a collection of trophy properties stretching from New York to California.

Among their holdings was a Tribeca townhouse with an iconic skybridge that sold for $24 million in 2022 and a record-setting Manhattan townhouse purchased for $72.5 million in 2024. Their portfolio has also included a $32.2 million Southampton estate and a roughly 20,000-acre New Mexico ranch previously owned by fashion designer Tom Ford.

In October 2022, they also sold a Victorian mansion in San Francisco for $19.15 million.

Butterfield, who co-founded workplace messaging platform Slack, saw his company acquired by Salesforce for $27.7 billion in 2021 — the same year he and Rubio purchased the Aspen retreat. He remained CEO following the acquisition before departing in 2023.

Rubio co-founded luggage brand Away in 2015 and currently serves as its executive chair.

Steven Shane of Compass represented the sellers in the Aspen transaction, while Kendall Greiner of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer.
