Goonies say never die — but the long-rumored sequel to the classic ‘80s movie might be dead in the water.
Actress Martha Plimpton, who played Stef Steinbrenner in “The Goonies,” exclusively declared to Page Six that “The Goonies 2” is “never gonna happen.”
The 55-year-old explained, “I hear something, and then nothing. And then every single person wants to know, and I hear the same answer. It’s nothing.”
Plimpton, who was chatting with Page Six to promote Season 2 of FX’s “The Lowdown,” starred in “The Goonies” in 1985 when she was 14.
Based on a story by Steven Spielberg, the classic adventure flick followed a group of kids on a treasure hunt, with Plimpton’s fellow cast members including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan.
During a 2020 virtual cast reunion hosted by Josh Gad, Spielberg explained that there have been “a lot of conversations” about a follow-up film.
“Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water,” the Oscar winner said. “The problem is the bar that [the movie] raised on this genre.
“I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than the Goonies that we all made in the ’80s,” the filmmaker continued.
However, Variety reported in February 2025 that a sequel was in the works, with Spielberg producing.
That same year, Quan told the outlet he “would love for it to happen.”
Feldman agreed at the time, saying, “Get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die. … There’s hope.”
Per Deadline, writer Potsy Ponciroli told fans at the 2025 Venice Film Festival that he had turned in a “well-received” first draft and things were “moving in the right direction.”
There have been no further updates.
In August 2025, Brolin shared his hopes with Entertainment Tonight that the project would happen “because the experience was so great.”
He pointed out, “The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it.”
However, he noted that he also has “trepidation” because he doesn’t “want to taint” his memory.
The “No Country For Old Men” actor went on to joke about a sequel coming out several decades after the first movie.
“The Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well,” he quipped.
