The dad of Browns and Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam was not a fan of his son’s offseason moves.
Haslam’s teams both made blockbuster deals this offseason that sent the teams’ long-tenured stars elsewhere, with the Browns trading Myles Garrett and the Bucks sending Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“My dad’s 95-and-a-half, but he still follows every sports move we make,” Haslam said at Browns training camp. “He called me up after we traded Giannis and goes, ‘Do you know in the last month you’ve traded Myles Garrett and Giannis?’”
Haslam has a 97-percent controlling stake in the Browns after initially purchasing 70% of the team in 2012. His family bought out the remaining minority portion from Randy Lerner by 2016.
The Browns sent Garret to the Rams in exchange for Jared Verse plus a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick.
Garret had spent the nine seasons prior in Cleveland, racking up 412 tackles, 125.5 sacks, and 23 forced fumbles.
“It was not an easy decision, but we’ve made it, and we’re moving on and excited about Jared and excited about those three draft picks,” Haslam said.
Haslam also has a 25-percent stake in the Bucks, after purchasing from Marc Lasry in April 2023.
The Bucks traded Antetokounmpo for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.
Haslam said at Browns training camp that the trade was to help the Bucks get younger, and he thought the return was more than worth it for the star.
Antetokounmpo spent his first 13 seasons in the NBA in Milwaukee, averaging 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and five assists in that span.
