Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos may be taking the next big step in their relationship: an Instagram hard launch.
On Live with Kelly and Mark on Monday, Ripa discussed the concept of a relationship “hard launch,” insisting that she and Consuelos “should” do so, despite being married for nearly three decades.
“So this is something, like, when we were young, people would carve their initials into a tree to declare that they are with someone, or, like, wear, like, your class ring or whatever,” she explained to Consuelos.
Ripa added that “hard launching” is most commonly recognized as making it “Instagram official to your online followers that you are with someone.”
“You know, you and I have never officially done that,” she teased. “Even though we’ve been together since before social media.”
Live‘s EP Michael Gelman reminded Ripa from off-camera, “We watch the show, that wasn’t enough?”
Ripa doubled down, “We should make a hard launch that we are steady.”
Consuelos joked, “On Instagram, because that makes it real.”
Ripa replied, “Yeah, Instagram makes it real. That’s where all the reality happens.”
However, Consuelos said he read a study claiming that “the happiest couples” don’t post pictures of themselves, prompting Ripa to jokingly clap back, “Well, then you must be frickin’ thrilled.”
“I caught myself. You saw that I was like… Find the other F word,” she quipped.
Consuelos questioned why in addition to getting someone a card and a gift for their birthday — which he enjoys — you must also “do some stupid Instagram post” for them, where “the pictures have to be right, or you’ve failed.”
“It’s dumb,” he noted.
Ripa then called out Consuelos for asking her for pictures of herself that she likes on “the eve of her birthday,” something she said “irritates [her] the most.”
Holding out his hand for Ripa to shake, Consuelos asked, “Are we shaking on it? We never have to do it again? Let’s shake,” to which Ripa fired back, “You’ve never done it to begin with.”
Though Consuelos said he “always” posts for Ripa’s birthday, he concluded, “We’re not hard launching anything.” Meanwhile, Ripa teased, “OK guys, so you’ll never know if we’re together or not.”
