Mets make latest hire for Andy Green’s coaching staff

The Mets are tapping into manager Andy Green’s past to fill out their coaching staff.

Johnny Washington, who had coached alongside Green both in San Diego and Chicago, will be hired as a co-hitting coach for the Mets, as The Post’s Joel Sherman first reported Thursday.

Last season, Washington served as the minor league hitting coordinator for the Braves. Previously, he had been the Angels’ hitting coach in 2024-25 and before that was an assistant hitting coach for the Cubs in 2022–2023, overlapping with then-bench coach Green.

As Padres manager in 2017, Green originally hired Washington as first base coach, promoted him the following season to assistant hitting coach, then promoted him to hitting coach in 2019.

Green was fired in September 2019, and Washington was let go after the season.

Washington, a minor league lifer who has had plenty of coaching stops, including the KBO, will join a hitting staff that no longer includes former director of hitting Jeff Albert, who will not return to the major league job. The Mets previously announced that hitting coaches Troy Snitker and Rafael Fernández will remain with the staff; it is unclear if the hitting team is now finalized.

Washington becomes the third known addition to the Mets’ coaching staff, joining longtime minor league coach Mariano Duncan and former catcher A.J. Ellis, who will be the team’s strategy coordinator.

The Mets will spend 2027 honoring Jerry Koosman.

After the greatest left-handed pitcher in franchise history died Sunday at 83, the Mets announced they would wear a patch memorializing Koosman on the sleeve of their home and road uniforms next season. The patch’s design has not yet been unveiled.

Koosman, whose No. 36 has hung in the Citi Field rafters since 2021 and who was elected into the team’s Hall of Fame in 1989, is the winningest southpaw in Mets history.

The perfect complement to Tom Seaver, Koosman pitched a complete game in the clinching Game 5 of the World Series in 1969, completing the remarkable championship run for the “Miracle Mets.”
