People are embracing ‘airplane rules’ for everyday life: ‘Money doesn’t matter’

On a normal day, most people likely follow a typical routine: eat a nutritious breakfast, have three meals per day, drink plenty of water, have a regular sleep schedule, etc.

But when “airport rules” come into play, anything goes.

People on TikTok are following so-called airport rules on a regular basis, eating pizza for breakfast, having a drink in the middle of the day and taking midday naps.

Users have declared that “airport rules are in effect,” meaning that all routines and norms go out the window, just like when you’re at an airport waiting around for your flight. When you’re traveling, tired and needing to fill spare time, it makes sense to spend $7 on a water bottle or eat a burger and fries at 9 a.m.

“Money means nothing and time of day means nothing,” one user explained. “If you wanna have mimosas while eating an entire sheet cake by yourself at 1:30 p.m., do that.”

The trend of applying these rules to everyday life initially started partially as a joke on election night as a way to cope and deal with the stress.

In a viral video posted on Nov. 4, the day before Election Day, one user said, “Airport rules are in effect, alright? Money, time — they mean nothing to us now. You want a drink at 9 a.m.? I’m not going to encourage it, but I’m not going to judge you for it, you know?”

However, even with the election behind us, the trend has continued to pick up and people have decided that airport rules are valid for the rest of the year — and for some, even beyond 2024.

“Comfy clothes at all times. Bathrobes in public are understandable,” one person commented. “Drinking at all hours allowed. Coffee/energy drinks at all hours also allowed. So if you had a donut and a beer for breakfast.”

“I’ve had a dirty martini and Doritos so far. Oh and runts and twizzlers, and am about to go raid my grandson’s Halloween haul. I have prosecco for later,” someone shared.

“This is why I had ramen for dinner at 1 a.m.,” another laughed.

“Started with an Irish coffee and just had a canned margarita with lunch,” one admitted.

“Airplane rules also include that money doesn’t matter. Buy whatever you want/need to get through this time,” someone added, sharing that they “anxiety bought a crockpot with a built-in holder for the lid. and it’s pink.”
