True Story of «Nightmare» ‘Titanic’ Kissing Scene

There are few cinematic moments more iconic than Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson’s first kiss in Titanic. Ya know, when she says, «Jack, I’m flying!» and then they lock lips as the sun sets/you weep hysterically? THIS OL’ THING:

Anyway, apparently the moment was not as romantic as it looked. During a convo with Vanity Fair, Kate said the scene was a «nightmare» to shoot—in part because the hair and makeup team wasn’t with them, so Kate had to stuff her dress with brushes and sponges thanks to her and Leo continuously getting foundation all over each other’s faces.

«What you wouldn’t know, because Leo looks completely natural, but he had to lie on sun beds, there’s a lot of fake tan makeup going on,» Kate began. «So I have got hidden in here and here, I’ve got his makeup and brushes and sponge, and my makeup and brushes and sponge in the other side. And between takes, I was basically redoing our makeup.»

Circling back to the kiss itself, Kate joked «He’s quite the romancer, isn’t he? No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was not all it’s cracked up to be.» She then went on to explain, «We kept doing this kiss, and I have a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks, me, on both of us, between takes. And I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me, and he just looked like there was a bit missing from his face.»

I mean, they pulled it off!
