When Warren Elliott went for a stroll during a camping trip on the Rubicon Trail in Placer County, CA, he had no idea he’d spend the next five days lost and alone.
The 70-year-old walked away from his group to explore an area that was quite familiar to him. However, when he attempted to rejoin his party, he took a wrong turn and couldn’t find his way back to his companions.
For several days, Elliott survived by drinking river water and eating handfuls of berries as he wandered through the wilderness for miles.
While his frantic family and friends waited for news, search teams from 10 agencies scoured the remote countryside on foot, also using drones and dog teams to help with the search.
Finally, their efforts paid off when Elliott was found, tired and hungry, but uninjured.
