Volodymyr Zelensky reversed his decision to sack Gen Valery Zaluzhny on Monday night, reports suggest.
The Times, The Economist and the Financial Times all report that Gen Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, was summoned to a meeting with Mr Zelensky and Rustem Umerov, the defence minister.
He was asked to resign but refused, with Mr Zelensky then saying he would sign a presidential decree to sack him.
But a backlash from senior officers, the Ukrainian public and Britain and the United States saw Gen Zaluzhny’s dismissal postponed, the reports claim.
Kyrylo Budanov, the military spy chief, and Col Gen Oleksandr Syrsky, a senior general, are both reported to have rejected offers to replace Gen Zaluzhny.
